Flags Over Oldham

About the Program

200 Flags and Counting!

Through “Flags Over Oldham” we will display the American Flag for a small fee on local residence lawns during six holidays throughout the year. For a fee of $30 per year ($5 per holiday), the scouts will install a permanent in-ground mounting sleeve, then post a 3’ x 5’ American Flag mounted to a 10 foot pole on Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day through Patriot ’s Day (9/11), Veteran’s Day and President's Day.

New for 2007-08, we've added President's Day!
The Flag Lease Program is a service project of the LaGrange Rotary Club and Boy Scout Troop 153. Rotarians are dedicated businessmen and women who provide humanitarian services to people throughout the world. Boy Scouts are dedicated to their threefold purpose of Character development, citizenship training and physical fitness.

The flags give residents an opportunity to display your patriotic spirit, pride and love for our country while providing funds for the Boy Scouts to provide much needed services to our community.

When you order a flag, we will insert a PVC plastic sleeve with a cap in the ground at a spot you designate. No brackets or fixtures are attached to your home. On each of the six days, a 3’ x 5’ U.S. Flag mounted on a 10-foot metal pole will be placed in the sleeve. We own, display, store and maintain the flags. It is all done for you! Please bring the flag inside each night and put it out again in the morning. Please display the flag on the day of pickup, rain or shine. Boy Scouts will pick up the flag and dry them if necessary.

Purpose of the Program

As with all non-profit organizations, fundraising is a key element of continued success. Troop 153 was formed in 2003 starting with just seven 11 & 12 year old young men. Now we have over 20 youths with ages ranging from 11 to 16 years and nearly 20 adult leaders. While we are very excited about our positive growth and the commitments these young men and their families are making towards their future and our community, we also find ourselves challenged financially in providing the programs and equipment required to continue this success. We believe “Flags Over Oldham” is a positive way to solve our funding dilemma while providing a great service to Oldham County and exposing our young men to valuable business experiences.

Thank you for the wonderful fundraising idea... Applause, applause! - LaGrange resident

Frequently Asked Questions:

How do you mount the flag pole? We will place a PVC sleeve in the ground and place a cap over it. You’ll be able to walk on it, mow over it, etc. We’ll remove the cap and slide the pole in during the holiday. We’ll replace the cap after the flag is removed.

Who owns the flag? They are owned by the LaGrange Rotary Club and Troop 153. You are leasing the flag from us.

I already have a flag, can you fly it? No, unfortunately we can only use the flags we own and care for.

I’d like it mounted to my house, can you do that? No, the flag pole will be free-standing in your yard. We do not want to risk any damage to your property.

Can you fly the flag on a different day? This is something we are considering, but cannot offer at this time.

Do I have to decide now? What if I sign up later? If you decide to sign up later, you’ll only be charged for the number of holidays remaining in the year.

Do we have to be home? No, we’ll place and remove the flagpole whether you are in town or not. Unfortunately, if you are not home, the flag will not be taken down at night.

What does the money go for? We are raising money for our high adventure activities and to reduce the cost of scouting for the families in our program.

Can I pick which holidays to fly the flag (for example, only Memorial Day and 4th of July)? No. This requires much more overhead to manage than we can handle.
